Withering Crops in Farmville

No one likes to go to their farm and see all their crops withered. But, it’s not the end of the world either. You lost some coins planting the crops that withered and missed out on the profits from them. But the good news is you still have enough coins to plant another field and you’ll make up for all those lost coins in a very short time.

Why do crops wither?

On real farms, crops will wither if they aren’t watered or if they get overripe. In Farmville, crops will wither if they aren’t harvested when they are ‘ready’. They get overripe and end up dying from neglect.

How long does it take before crops wither?

• You have double the amount of a crop’s harvest time to harvest without worrying about withering. For example, a 4 hour crop can be harvested up to 8 hours after planting it.

• If time exceeds the double harvest time, your crops will start to wither one-by-one until all of them have completely died.

• Crops will be fully withered in 2.5 times the harvest time. For example, if you planted a 4 hour crop, the whole field of that crop will be withered in 10 hours (4 hours to grow, 4 hours of ripeness, 2 hours of extra harvest time in which crops start to wither).

When will crops not wither?

• When Zynga has technical difficulties and Farmville does not load for periods of time, they remove the withering and puppy hunger feature. Crops are temporarily unable to wither and die and puppies won’t run away. A message will be posted at the top of your Farmville page when this feature is in effect.

• If you harvest your crops on time, they will not wither.

• If you have an ‘Unwither Ring’, your crops will never wither – as long as you keep the unwither ring on your farm. You can buy this ring in the Market for 250 Farm Cash.

• An interesting feature of Farmville is ‘Natural Unwithers’. Introduced in March of 2010, if you are away from your farm for longer than 14 days, you crops will automatically become unwithered so when you come back you will be able to harvest a field full of plump, ripe crops. This is a nice incentive from Zynga, especially since no one wants to leave a game only to come back to a field full of dead crops.

How to deal with withered crops

There are a few ways to go about handling withered crops. First you must decide if you want to bring them back to life or if you just want to remove them and replant.

Bringing withered crops back to life

There are some reasons you might want to bring your crops back to life instead of just replanting the field.

Suppose you are a part of a co-op and others rely on you to harvest your crops to get the gold medal. This might be a good reason to unwither your crops.

Maybe you needed that batch of crops to get a mastery star. Maybe it was for a ribbon. Maybe something else.

Whatever your reason is for unwithering your crops, it is pretty simple to do – just spray them with an ‘Unwither Spray’.

Replanting your crops without ‘unwithering’

Perhaps you don’t feel that your withered crops are the end of the world and you’d rather just replant new crops and bypass the ‘unwither’ option. This is very simple to do.

You can clear the dead plots with a tractor or a combine. You won’t gain any XP or coins from these withered crops but you will be able to plant and harvest new ones once the field is cleared. You’ll be able to get back the coins you lost in no time!

Unwithering and the Unwither Spray

The ‘Unwither Spray’ is a consumable in Farmville that will let you bring your field of crops back to life. Unwither costs Farm Cash. You can typically purchase 3 of these sprays for 30 Farm Cash from the Market. Also, if you have friends that have an unwither spray in their giftbox, they can come to your farm and unwither all of your crops if they choose to share it with you. If they don’t have an unwither spray in their giftbox, they may also be prompted to unwither your crops for free. Another thing to know is that whenever your friends visit your withered farm (and they are not prompted to unwither your farm), they will be able to help you by ‘unwithering’ up to 5 plots.

How to prevent crop withering

1. Remember when you planted your crops. If you know the time you planted, you can add the number of harvest hours/days to that number to figure out when they’ll be ready. For example, if you plant a 4 hour crop at 1:00 PM, it will be ready at 5:00 PM.

2. Don’t wait past the double harvest time to harvest your crops. For example, make sure you harvest that 4 hour crop between 5:00 PM and 8:59 PM. Don’t wait longer than this or you are risking your crops becoming withered.

3. If you have a busy life schedule, consider planting crops with longer harvest times. You will have a lot more leeway when it comes to harvesting longer crops. For example, compared with a 4 hour crop, a 2 day crop will give you 4 days to harvest without withering. Let’s say you’re going on a trip and won’t have access to Farmville, but you still want to plant them now and harvest them when you come back. Consider planting a 4 day crop. You’ll have 8 days to harvest it without worrying about it withering. Plus, it won’t fully wither for another 2 days after that!

4. If you are still having trouble keeping your crops alive, think about investing in an ‘Unwither Ring’. As long as you keep the ring on your farm, your crops will never wither.

5. In the English Farm, you can purchase the Unwither Clock Tower. This mini Big Ben lookalike costs 55 Farm Cash in the Market and keeps your crops from withering for 30 days.
