Different Types of Seeds and Crops in Farmville
There are many different types of crops in Farmville. Crops can come from different places, some give more XP than others, and some are more expensive than others. Some seeds need to be created, some are free, and some need a permit or prior crop mastery for them to be ‘unlocked’.
These are the current types of crops available in Farmville:
• Basic seeds from the Market
• Premium (locked) Crops
• Limited edition seeds from the Market
• Limited edition seeds from Free Gifts
• Hybrid Seeds
• Charity and Relief seeds
• English Countryside Crops

Basic Seeds from the Market

Basic Seeds from the Market The basic seeds from the Market are the seeds that can be purchased for coins when you reach the required level. The higher the level you reach, the more crops you can choose from and plant. As the level required increases, so does the price, and so does the amount of coins you can earn per plot. Basic crops can be vegetables, grains, fruit, flowers, nuts, berries and inedibles.
Some examples of basic crops are:
• Strawberries
• Cotton
• Daffodils
• Blue Berries
• Wheat
• Peas

Premium (Locked) Crops

Premium crops can also be called ‘Heirloom Crops’ and ‘Locked’ crops. The thing that makes these crops different from all other crops is that you must master a certain crop to be able to ‘unlock’ and plant them. For example, to unlock ‘Posole Corn’ you need to have already mastered basic ‘Corn’.
Premium crops in Farmville have always been related to the prerequisite crop – square melon/watermelon, carnival squash/pattypan squash, etc. The crops can differ in color, shape, or variety from the first one. Premium crops will also typically require you to be a higher level than their prerequisite crops. Sometimes they stay permanently in the Market, other times they are for special events and are limited editions.
Some examples of Premium/Locked/Heirloom Crops are:
• Heirloom Carrots (requires ‘carrots’ master)
• Zucchini (requires ‘pattypan squash’ mastery)
• Purple Asparagus (requires ‘asparagus’ mastery)
• Chickpeas (requires ‘soybeans’ mastery)
• Triticale (requires ‘wheat’ and ‘rye’ mastery – Swiss Alps Event)

Limited Edition from the Market

These limited edition crops can appear in the market for holidays, seasons, special occasions, etc. These crops have a time-span and when the time is over if you haven’t mastered them you will not be able to. However, if they are re-released in the market, you will have another chance at mastery.
Many times, these crops cannot be grown at all in the real world. Sometimes they will be man-made foods such as baked goods and candy. Other times they will be man-made items like balloons.
Limited Edition Market crops can also be ‘real’ crops or crops with altered colors and sizes. And, sometimes they will actually be ‘real’ crops, like triticale and poinsettas.
Some examples of Limited Edition Market crops are:
• Poinsettas
• Cupcakes
• Nachos
• Green Roses
• White Pumpkins
• Candy Corn
• Balloons

Limited Edition from Free Gifts

These types of seeds can only be obtained as a free gift from a neighbor. They are free to both you and your neighbor. When these seeds are sent as gifts, they usually come in ‘packs of 20 seeds’, meaning you only have enough seeds to plant 20 plots.
So you’ll have to get a lot of seed packs to plant a whole field. Also note that farmers can only send one seed packet (or any other gift) to friends once every 4 hours.
Some examples of Limited Edition Free Gift crops are:
• Black Roses
• White Poinsettas

Hybrid Seeds and Crops

Hybrid seeds are the result of mixing 2 different types of seeds in the Greenhouse and creating a new seed. The new seed will be a combination of the two seeds used to create it. For example, a combination of a ‘Lilac’ and a ‘Daffodil’ will produce a ‘Lilac Daffy’.
There are currently 10 Hybrid Crops:
• Lilac Daffy
• Straspberry
• Squmpkin
• Red Spinach
• Sun Poppy
• Whisky Peat
• Fire Pepper
• Double Grain
• Purple Tomatoes
• Long Onions
How to get hybrid seeds
With a fully upgraded Greenhouse of 8 seedling trays you can create up to 8 new seeds at a time. For every packet of seeds you create in your seed tray, you will collect 50 seeds. This means that you’ll be able to plant 50 plots of seeds. There can be a maximum of 400 seeds being made in the Greenhouse at any given point.
However, seeds take 3 days to mature in their trays in the Greenhouse. With the help of neighbors, this could go much quicker. You will need to get three neighbors to ‘help’ each seed tray for it to completely mature, bypassing the required days of growth. But, if you don’t get all 3 neighbors per tray, it’s OK. If you get 1 out of 3, you’ll get a day taken off and only have to wait 2 days. If you get 2 neighbors, you’ll get 2 days taken off. Three friends will mature them instantly.
When your seeds are ready, you can share them with your friends on the newsfeed. Your neighbors can do the same. Whenever a special seed is shared on the newsfeed, the player who claims it will receive 20 special seeds.
Hybrid seeds can also be obtained by going to your friends’ farms and clicking on the greenhouses. You will help your neighbor with their seed mixing and you will receive 5 special seeds.
Profitability
Hybrid seeds tend to be more profitable than normal crops. Seeds grown in the Greenhouse must be purchased in groups of 50 seeds. If you do the division from the bulk cost to the individual cost you will see that it costs the same amount of coins per crop to create 50 seeds as it does to create one. For example, Lilacs cost 35 coins in the Market. In the Greenhouse you must buy 50 for 1,750 coins, coming out to 35 coins each.
However, there have been problems with the hybrid seeds. Once you buy and mix them in the Greenhouse, many players have reported that they get charged a second time when they actually plant the seeds on their farm. This error can make hybrids virtually profitless, assuming you have already paid to make some in the Greenhouse.
Once a crop has been mastered, there will no longer be a ‘locked’ button on the crop in the Market. The crop will be unlocked and you no longer have to mix and breed seeds to create it. You’ll be able to plant it as usual.
More XP
Planting hybrid crops will allow you to gain more XP and advance in levels quicker. Each hybrid seed gives 1XP extra.

Charity and Relief Seeds

There are occasions where Zynga will introduce a seed to raise money to aid in a global emergency or disaster, or to support a charity. You must purchase a ‘permit’ with Farm Cash to be able to plant these seeds. Once planted, they will never wither. You only have a limited time to plant Charity/Relief crops.
The 2010 earthquake crisis in Haiti is a perfect example of relief in the form of a seed. Only a short time after the earthquake hit, Zynga released the crop ‘Sweet Beets for Haiti’. Sweet Beets were available as a permit for 25 Farm Cash. The crops were non-withering and you could plant as many as you wanted for a week. Sweet Beets were one of the best value crops to grow. They only cost 10 coins and sold for 125 coins; a net profit of 105 coins per plot (after 15 coins per plow taken out).
Some examples of Charity and Relief Seeds are:
• Sweet Seeds (5 different seeds) – for Haiti
• Candy Canes – for UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital
• Daikon -For Japan earthquake relief

English Countryside Seeds and Crops

The English Countryside has exclusive seeds that cannot be planted on your home farm. These are like the basic crops of your normal farm – you can buy them from the Market and plant them as you wish. They can be mastered and each one has a unique cost and harvest period.
At the current time, only one farm can be active at a time. Whichever farm you were on last and left off at will be the active farm. The other one will be paused. So, for example, if you last played on your English farm, your crops, animals, buildings, and trees will not grow on your home farm until you switch over to it.
Some examples of English Countryside Seeds are:
• Hops
• Barley
• Cara Potatoes
• English Roses
• Field Beans
• Black Tea
