Pet Dogs
Dogs are your pets in Farmville. They are the only animal in the game that are animated to the point where they can run around the farm and follow you. They can learn to perform tricks and help out on the farm doing different tasks. You can choose your pet dog’s color, gender, and name and you can have more than one on your farm. Dogs cannot be harvested and they are currently the only type of pet available.
Dogs come in many breeds. Each breed performs different tasks. Some cost Farm Cash while others can be bought with coins. Some dog breeds are always available in the market. Others are limited edition and will come and go.
Different Types of Dogs
Each dog breed is unique. Each performs a different task once they grow up to be adult dogs. You can buy some breeds in the market for coins and some for cash. Listed below are the different types of dog breeds currently available in the market:

From Puppy to Adult – Growing Your Dog
Feeding Your Puppy – Kibble
Just like real puppies, Farmville puppies need to be fed. They eat puppy kibble and you need to give it to them everyday for two weeks. If you don’t feed them, they’ll be taken to the pound and you will either have to pay Farm Cash to get them out or forfeit your puppy.
This is really a lot less scary than it sounds. First, if you buy a puppy for 65 Farm Cash, he will automaticaly come with a two week supply of puppy kibble. All you have to do is remember to feed it to him everyday. If you bought your puppy with coins, he will only come with a one day supply of puppy kibble. You have to get the other 13 days worth of kibble. This is pretty easy if you know how to do it.
The first and most instant way you can get kibble is by purchasing it from the market. This can get pretty pricey, though, as each kibble costs 3 Farm Cash. If you buy them all from the market you’ll be paying 39 Farm Cash!
There are free ways to get your dog its kibble. When you initially purchase your dog, ask for kibble from your friends. Publish it to your newsfeed. Your friends will help you and even if you only get a couple of days worth of kibble, it’s a couple of days you don’t have to buy it in the market. Everyday when you click on your dog you have the option of publishing a help request to the newsfeed asking for kibble. Use this, too. If you want to get more kibble stocked away or if too few or none of your friends are helping you on the newsfeed, ask them to send you kibble as a free gift. You can also ‘Make a Wish’ for kibble when you go to your giftbox.
A puppy needs to be fed everyday. You are given up to 47 hours and 59 minutes leeway to get this done. But, every hour and minute that you let pass from the last feeding time will be deducted from the next feeding time. For example, if you feed your puppy at 1 PM one day and 5 PM the next day (4 hours difference), you will only have 20 hours left until 1 PM on the following day to feed your puppy. Those 4 hours have been subtracted from the time between your feedings.
If your puppy gets taken to the pound you will have to decide what you want to do about it. Getting your puppy out of the pound will cost 2 Farm Cash. Decide if you want to pay this or just start over. If you bought a dog for 65 Farm Cash, you’ll probably want to pay the fine so not to lose the dog you invested so much into. If you bought a Terrier for 5,000 coins, it might be worth it to save the cash and just start over. All you would lose is 5,000 coins and some kibble, both of which are very easy to get back. Farm Cash, on the other hand, is more valuable and harder to come by.
Feeding Your Dog – Treats
You’re going to have to feed your dog treats if you want him to perform tricks and ultimately be able to help you on your farm. The tricks are the cute part. But besides being visually appealing, there is no real benefit to your dog doing the first 3 tricks. The real goal to strive for with a dog is the last ‘trick’. The highest level trick your dog can learn is the trick that will actually be purposeful on your farm. This trick varies between dog breeds but can be any of the following: harvesting animals, harvesting cows, harvesting sheep, harvesting ducks/rabbits, or fetching consumables.
*Note: All limited edition dogs will fetch consumables.
Your dog will require different amounts of treats to ‘master’ different tricks.
• Level 1 Trick “Roll Over” requires 1 treat to master
• Level 2 Trick “Play Dead” requires 3 consecutive days of treats to master
• Level 3 Trick “Shake” requires 3 consecutive days of treats to master
• Level 4 Trick –Individual to each breed- requires 7 consecutive days of treats to master
The Level 4 trick is the most important trick. You will need to feed your dog treats everyday for one week for your dog to learn this final trick.
Once your dog learns a new trick, they will not forget it, even if you do not feed him anymore treats. If your dog is in the process of learning a new trick and you do not feed him in 24 hours, he will ‘forget’ this trick and you will have to restart at the level you were working on. All tricks before that, however, will be retained.
Final Thoughts
Try to purchase a dog at your normal farming time so he can be fed at the same time everyday. This will reduce the risk of your dog not getting fed and being taken away to the pound. Your dog can be helping you around your farm in a minimum of one month. This takes into consideration that you have never missed a day of kibble or treats and that you have started feeding your dog treats right after he has matured into an adult.
If you have any doubts and think there is a chance you might not be able to feed your puppy, consider investing coins instead of cash into your first dog. You can think of this dog as your starter dog and practice with him first. You can purchase a dog for Farm Cash later if you know you like having a dog.
